PROJECTS

C.A.N.E COMMUNITY CHEST - Small grants for the community

The C.A.N.E. community chest is an opportunity for people and organisations in New Eltham to benefit from a small grant to help with a community project. C.A.N.E. is offering grants of up to £200 for projects and activities that help to meet local needs and benefit the community. C.A.N.E. sees this grant as a way to benefit people in New Eltham who are running a project, or setting up a new project for and on behalf of the local community.

We envisage the grant not taking up the whole cost of running the project or activity. C.A.N.E. wants to encourage the setting up of new activities as well as supporting existing ones. It hopes to encourage groups that are active within the following sectors:-

Youth, self help, support for the elderly, community arts, disability, equal opportunity, parent teacher associations plus using the IT equipment.

All applications for a community chest grant must be made on an application form available from the community rooms in New Eltham Library. All applications will be considered by the C.A.N.E. community chest sub committee who meet approximately every six weeks. The application will be aknowledged and the applicant notified of the date when it will be considered. The named applicant will be notified of the outcome in writing.

C.A.N.E. wishes to promote youth involvement in New Eltham. Applications must be signed by a person over the age of 18.This will not necessarily mean that an activity run by young people will be excluded from consideration.

So far this year we have given £150 to the Friday afternoon social club to help towards the cost of an outing for its members, adn £150 to a family group who meet in the Methodist Centre in term time.

To enquire about the above project you can call the community centre co-ordinator (Sue Killick) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9:30am and 2:00pm on 020 8850 7122, or E-mail us on cane.sue@lycos.co.uk.

C.A.N.E. Helping Hands:

In January 2008 C.A.N.E. launched its "Helping Hands" project. The committee met to discuss how the Community Association of New Eltham could help the local people both young and old. It was agreed that a pre set sum of money from the Community Associations funds would be set aside to be used for certain projects agreed by the committee at the beginning of each year.

1. In February the annual senior citizens party took place and was given as a suprise free event. 60 local people booked to attend and were suprised on arrival that they didn't have to pay for the afternoon which included a buffet lunch, free raffle and live entertainment from Mario. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and ended up on the dance floor after their lunch dancing to Marios songs.

2. In March John Killick (C.A.N.E. secretary) and Sylvia Thornton (C.A.N.E. committee member and New Eltham library manager) went along to Wybourne School in Footscray Road on "World Books Day" to present them with a cheque for £1000. This money will be used to refurbish Wybournes ageing library furniture. The children dressed up in costumes relating to certain books all of which were lovingly made by parents etc. A photographer from the Newsshopper was also there to record the event and as you can tell by the photographs everyone had a great time at assembly that morning.
